WFP Faces Funding Gap Threatening Operations in Sudan by End of October
Amsterdam: Tuesday, September 29, 2026: Radio Dabanga - The World Food Programme (WFP) has revealed mounting funding pressures facing its humanitarian operations in Sudan, warning that available resources for food stocks and cash transfers could run out by the end of October 2026, at a time when humanitarian needs continue to grow in several states across the country. In its country brief for September, the WFP stated that it urgently requires $431 million over the next six months to maintain current assistance levels, while the total net funding requirements for the same period amount to $591 million. In Khartoum, the WFP reached 120,000 people during August, 65,000 of whom received cash transfers, while 55,000 children under the age of five and pregnant and lactating women benefited from malnutrition treatment activities. The WFP is preparing, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, to launch a school feeding program in Jebel Aulia targeting approximately 75,000 students across 115 schools. In northeastern Sudan, the WFP reached 696,000 people during August in the states of Gedaref, Kassala, Northern, Red Sea, and River Nile, providing in-kind food assistance to 49,000 people and cash transfers to 390,000. School feeding programs also reached 157,000 children in Gedaref and Kassala as part of efforts to support the gradual return to schools. In the Blue Nile, Gezira, Sennar, and White Nile states, 628,000 people benefited from WFP interventions during the same month, including 143,000 who received in-kind food assistance and 371,000 who benefited from cash transfers. Nutrition activities in these states included 53,000 children under the age of five and pregnant and lactating women. Challenges in Darfur and Kordofan: In Darfur and Kordofan, the WFP continued to provide aid amidst security and administrative challenges and access difficulties, while seasonal floods in North Darfur, particularly in Tawila and surrounding areas, led to increased humanitarian needs and complicated aid delivery operations. Regarding logistical support, the WFP helped transport 1,286 cubic meters of humanitarian cargo to 12 locations in Darfur and West Kordofan using 29 trucks. The UN Humanitarian Air Service also conducted 96 flights during August, transporting 1,111 passengers and 3.39 metric tons of humanitarian cargo. The WFP noted that direct contributions received during 2026 reached $249 million, amidst warnings that resource shortages could impact the continuation of food assistance and cash transfers for those in need in Sudan.
