Customs dollar adjusted by more than 29 percent
Amsterdam – October 19, 2026 – Radio Dabanga The Sudanese Customs Authority has increased the indicative price of the customs dollar against the pound to reach over 5,631 pounds, up from 4,346 pounds, marking an increase of 29 percent. This is the fifth such adjustment this year, with experts warning that the move will lead to further price hikes. The exchange rate of the dollar has risen over the past few days to reach 9,300 pounds, amid fears that it will cross the 10,000-pound threshold in the coming days. The Customs Authority stated that the increase is intended to keep pace with the continuous rise of foreign currency prices in the parallel market. Economic expert Dr. Haitham Fathi told Radio Dabanga that increasing the customs dollar will lead to an immediate rise in the cost of importing essential goods, including food, medicine, and spare parts. Fathi pointed out that this move coincides with the continuous decline in the value of the Sudanese pound and the impact of the war on domestic production, supply chains, and intra-regional trade, which will increase inflation rates. He also predicted that this step would increase tax burdens, as the financial burden in local currency for importers to clear their goods at land, sea, and air ports will rise. He added that adjusting the customs dollar might lead to a decline in imports, and traders may be forced to reduce their import volumes or stop temporarily due to these burdens, which could cause a decline in state revenues from customs and import-related taxes. Fathi warned that the increase in the customs dollar exchange rate could lead the Sudanese economy into a phase of both depression and inflation (stagflation). He also expects prices to rise by at least 30%, which will lead to a significant decline in the purchasing power of Sudanese citizens.
