African Union Condemns Drone Attacks in Sudan and the Abyei Region

Addis Ababa – October 22, 2026 – Radio Dabanga – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, strongly condemned the recent deadly drone attacks carried out in Sudan and the Abyei region. Media reports, citing local and medical sources, indicate that about 80 people were killed in the 'Al-Dabab' area of West Kordofan State on October 18, and 23 people in Nyala, South Darfur State, on October 16, in addition to the deaths of at least three children in Khartoum on October 19. In a separate context, reports citing local authorities stated that the death toll from the attack that occurred on October 19 on the 'Amit' market in the Abyei region has exceeded 150. The Chairperson expressed his deep regret over the high price that civilians continue to pay, reflected in the loss of their loved ones, displacement, destruction of livelihoods, and the disruption of access to food, healthcare, and essential services. Call to End Attacks The Chairperson called on all parties to cease attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, to protect humanitarian and medical personnel, and to facilitate the safe, rapid, and unimpeded access of humanitarian aid, in accordance with applicable international law, including international humanitarian law. He also reaffirmed his respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Sudan, calling on all parties to refrain from any practices that would fuel the conflict, threaten the country's unity, or pose a risk to neighboring countries. The Chairperson reiterated his support for ongoing regional and international mediation efforts, calling for coordinated action to reach an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and to launch an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process.
