Amsterdam - October 22, 2026 - Radio Dabanga: The annual inflation rate in Sudan rose during last September to 28.290% in September 2026, while food and beverage prices jumped by 17.26% in a single month, according to a statement by the Central Bureau of Statistics regarding consumer price indices. Inflation rates for August were 26.14%, while they were 41.6% in July. The data showed an increase in the general consumer price index to 798,530.55 points in September, compared to 742,830.07 points in August, recording a monthly increase of 7.50%. The consumer goods and services price index recorded 798,530.55 points for September 2026, compared to 622,432.38 points in September 2025, an increase of 176,098.17 points, representing an annual rate of change (inflation) of 28.29% (meaning the annual rate of change in the general price level in September 2026 increased by 28.29% compared to the same period in the previous year). This means that the general level of prices for consumer goods and services in September 2026 was 28.29% higher compared to its level in September 2025, confirming the continued rise in prices on an annual basis, due to the increase in prices for most commodity and service groups (food and beverages, tobacco, clothing and footwear, housing, household equipment and furniture, health, transport, communications, restaurants, and hotels). Food group rise: The food and beverage group recorded a larger increase, with its index rising to 378,212.09 points, compared to 322,538.55 points in August. Prices for this group also rose by 36.81% on an annual basis, compared to September 2025. In terms of regions, the annual inflation rate in urban areas reached 40.35% compared to 21.18% in rural areas, reflecting a disparity in price increase rates between urban and rural regions. The annual change (inflation) measures the change in the general price level for the current month of the year compared to the same month last year; it is an annual measure, calculated by dividing the difference between the price index for September 2026 and the price index for September 2025 by the price index for September 2025, multiplied by 100. Reasons for rising inflation: Economic experts attributed the high inflation rates to a heavy reliance on imports due to the war's destruction and sabotage of the production base, as well as the deterioration of the exchange rate, customs dollar pricing, the imposition of fees and customs on goods, and various remaining transit fees. They explained that the war is ongoing and prevents a very large number of citizens from returning to production areas to provide goods locally and reduce reliance on imports, noting that this is one of the clear reasons for the rise in inflation rates. They confirmed that the costs of transporting goods from one region to another have increased, stating that the market is divided between areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Army, while people have not been able to resume production as required.
