Civil War in Sudan | Global Conflict Tracker
Sudan's civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has created one of the world's most devastating conflicts since fighting erupted on April 15, 2023. In June 2024, an NGO report stated that over 235 fires had been set in villages across Sudan, with a majority set by militias in Darfur. A statement made by the UN in January indicated that between ten thousand and fifteen thousand people were killed in 2023 due to ethnic violence by the RSF and its allies in West Darfur. On March 8, 2024, the UN Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate cessation of violence in Sudan. In January 2025, the SAF drove RSF forces out of Omdurman, recaptured a vital oil refinery just north of Khartoum, and regained near-total control of Bahri. The conflict has killed hundreds of thousands and forced more than 14 million people from their homes—the largest displacement crisis in the world. Famine has been confirmed in multiple areas, and the health system has collapsed. International responses have included sanctions by the United States, European Union, and United Kingdom against entities and individuals fueling the conflict. The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission has documented extensive human rights violations, and the ICC continues its investigations in Darfur.
