In response to the Sudan crisis, global advocacy organizations sprang into action, launching the worldwide Save Darfur campaign. In the United States, there were mass efforts from congregations and community centers to call representatives and march in the streets.
This time, communities and advocates have mobilized within Sudan, but the rest of the world has taken little action.
In the face of U.S. inaction, however, civil society organizations have taken bold steps to support grassroots leaders in Sudan. The UUSC continues to advocate for mutual aid as a critical pathway for donors to make the greatest impact.
By leveraging position, resources, and network, they grow a global community of support. By supporting grassroots justice work, they plant seeds of a future in which Sudan thrives.
Sudanese American activist Emtithal Mahmoud reminds us: "Your courage is not forgotten."
The solidarity movement calls for sustained international attention, direct funding to mutual aid groups, and recognition of the leadership emerging from within Sudan itself. The crisis has been met with widespread apathy, but authentic leadership has emerged from the Sudanese people themselves.
