Rapid Support Forces Target Fuel Depot East of Wad Madani with Drones
Wad Madani: September 27, 2026 – Radio Dabanga. Drones belonging to the Rapid Support Forces targeted the 'Umm Alila' depot east of Wad Madani at dawn this Sunday. Videos circulating on social media showed flames spreading over large areas of the depot, with civil defense teams attempting to extinguish the fires. The attack focused on the Umm Alila depots located northeast of the city of Wad Madani, near the Abu Haraz area in East Gezira locality, a facility used for storing and distributing petroleum products. Citizens said that shortly after performing the dawn prayer, they heard consecutive explosions in the town of Abu Haraz, affiliated with the East Gezira locality, following an attack by suicide drones on the Umm Alila depots, which are located about 20 kilometers northeast of Wad Madani. Importance of the depot: The Umm Alila depots are considered a strategic reserve for storing gasoline and diesel and distributing them in Gezira State, and one of the most important petroleum storage facilities in central Sudan; it was established to transport fuel directly from the Al-Jaili refinery to the center of the country without the need for trucks to cross long land routes. The bombing led to fires in several main tanks, while thick columns of smoke rose from the fuel tanks, raising real concerns about a wider humanitarian disaster. The Civil Defense forces in Gezira State said that its teams began firefighting and cooling operations to contain the flames without allowing them to spread to intact tanks, noting that they were able to secure the facility's perimeter and limit the damage to only the affected tanks, which were the gasoline and diesel tanks, while the rest of the tanks remained intact. The Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces exchange drone attacks, leading to the death of civilians and the destruction of civilian sites. A UN fact-finding mission said in a report that more than 1,000 people were killed in drone attacks during the first five months of 2026, accusing both sides of committing grave violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in drone operations, and confirming that some of these acts may amount to war crimes.
