The United Nations has welcomed the decision by authorities in Sudan to keep the Adre border crossing with Chad open. The organization will be able to use the crossing to deliver humanitarian aid until at least the end of the year. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the crossing serves as a vital lifeline for many residents of Darfur. In the first eight months of this year, more than 1,300 trucks carrying over 50,000 metric tons of aid crossed through the border into Sudan. In his daily press briefing, Dujarric said that keeping the border crossing open and ensuring safe land access were among the urgent priorities identified by the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher during the high-level week of the General Assembly, which concluded on Monday.
