Manazeer Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Zuhair Al-Sarraj, manazzeer@yahoo.com. Those who went to Geneva to bury the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan have returned dragging the tails of disappointment and failure, after the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted the resolution to extend the mission's mandate for one year by a majority of 28 countries, against 10 countries, with 9 abstentions! The decision was not a surprise to anyone, as the Fact-Finding Mission presented its report on the war in Sudan during the sixty-third session, focusing on gross violations of international humanitarian law and human rights, as well as the weapons, fighters, and foreign support networks that help perpetuate the war. The discussions clearly showed the support of a large number of members for extending the mission. The coup authorities attempted to justify their opposition to the mission's continuation as interference in Sudanese affairs, while the people of Sudan and the free world see the necessity of continuing to document violations, reveal the truth, expose criminals, and bring them to justice. Thank God the Council has spoken, and the attempt to close this door has ended in total failure, with it being reopened for a full year. The mission does not possess an army, aircraft, or ground troops to interfere in Sudan's sovereignty; its task is limited to investigation, documentation, evidence collection, and identifying those responsible for violations—a task needed by the Sudanese people who have paid the highest price for this war more than anyone else. In addition to continuing the investigation into the gross violations committed by the parties to the war, the resolution called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire without preconditions, and for a civilian-led, inclusive political transition. It also addressed the delivery of humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians! Most painful for the authorities is that their abandonment did not come from Western countries alone, but was clearly evident in the African position. A number of African countries, including South Africa and The Gambia, voted in favor of extending the mission's mandate, despite the Sudanese government's attempts to portray the battle as a defense of Sudan's sovereignty against Western nations! The coup authority did not find support even from some countries it relied upon, except for Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, China, Cuba, Vietnam, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Burundi (as usual). In contrast, 28 countries voted for the extension—what a crushing political and diplomatic defeat! The irony is that the de facto authority, which claims to fight for Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, found itself in a failed battle to prevent an independent international institution from continuing to investigate the crimes committed in Sudan, including crimes committed by the Janjaweed militia it is fighting. Why seek to close the file if it is innocent, as it claims, and why not let the mission document the crimes of the Janjaweed?! Congratulations to the people of Sudan. Files of crimes and violations will not be buried with their victims, as the criminal authorities and their cursed 'Kizan' desired. Evidence will remain preserved, and those who committed, ordered, funded, or armed the crimes will not succeed in erasing the traces. Justice may be delayed, but it will not die as long as there is an entity documenting, investigating, and preserving the evidence. And tomorrow is near for those who await!
