Amsterdam: Thursday, October 8, 2026: Radio Dabanga - The Sudanese Teachers' Committee announced that it submitted a memorandum of teachers' demands to the Republican Palace yesterday, Wednesday, confirming that the memorandum is not the end of the escalation, but a clear declaration that the waiting phase is over. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris directed the payment of teachers' arrears in all states of Sudan. In a statement reviewed by 'Radio Dabanga,' the Committee said it had delivered its memorandum to the Republican Palace and that the ball is now in the court of the highest authority, considering it a decisive step in the path of securing teachers' rights after executive institutions, both federal and state, failed to address the crisis, and the Committee had exhausted all opportunities for waiting and appeals. It explained that the memorandum presented the core of the crisis to the Sovereignty Council with figures and specific demands to raise the minimum wage to 500,000 pounds, reform the wage structure, pay arrears and allowances, regularize the payment of salaries by the fifth day of each month, end disparities between states, and address the conditions of teachers in Darfur and Kordofan. It indicated that the memorandum demanded the protection of public education from collapse, stopping the decline that led to the expansion of private education and threatened the existence of public education, and binding the state to assume its full responsibility toward public education. It stated: 'It was explained with figures how deep the crisis is, as the cost of living reaches 4,180,000 pounds to cover basic needs for a family of five, while the average teacher's salary does not exceed 128,125 pounds, which covers only about 3% of those needs.' It indicated that the issue is no longer just about arrears being paid off; it has become an issue of a base salary that has lost its value, a broken wage structure, and a public education system whose stability and continuity are threatened. It noted that the teachers' issue is now a direct responsibility of the highest authority; after the crisis remained stuck between executive institutions at the center and states, the teachers' demands have reached the highest level in the state. It continued: 'What we are waiting for now is not new promises, but a clear response, specific deadlines, and implementation.' Directive to pay salaries: For his part, Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris directed the payment of teachers' arrears in all states of Sudan. This followed his meeting with the Minister of Education and National Guidance, Dr. Al-Tohamy Al-Zain Hajar, in the presence of the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Gibril Ibrahim, the head of the General Union of Public Education Workers, Mr. Abbas Habib Allah, and the head of the Sudanese Teachers' Professional Union, Mr. Nizar Sheikh Idris. The Minister of Education and National Guidance explained in a press statement that the meeting discussed the issue of teachers' salaries and their centralization, noting that teachers' arrears in all states of the country will be paid in the coming days. For his part, the head of the General Union of Education Workers expressed his thanks and appreciation for the Prime Minister's interest in education issues and improving teachers' conditions, confirming his keenness to exert more effort to contribute to the stability of education in the country. The meeting took place concurrently with the delivery of the teachers' memorandum to the Republican Palace.
