Hundreds of African and International Organizations Demand Sudan Cooperate on 'Chemical Weapons'
Dakar - October 11, 2026 - Radio Dabanga - The Civil Society Organization Forum, held on the sidelines of the 89th session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, which begins tomorrow, Monday, has demanded that Sudan cooperate fully with all states party to the Chemical Weapons Convention, as well as with regional and international fact-finding mechanisms. It also urged the country to allow the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to deploy technical teams, and to ensure that any investigation is conducted in a comprehensive, transparent, independent, and timely manner. At the conclusion of its meetings in Dakar yesterday, Saturday, the forum also demanded that Sudan, as a member state of the OPCW Executive Council, cooperate constructively with the organization, particularly by declaring any chemical weapons production facilities, disclosing the locations of relevant munitions, and allowing the organization to verify and destroy these munitions in accordance with its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention. Abdelbagi Jibril, President of the Sudan Knowledge Center, said in an interview with Radio Dabanga that the forum demanded an immediate cessation of all forms of external interference supporting the warring parties in Sudan, including the supply of weapons, financing the war effort, and providing diplomatic and political support. Ceasefire: The forum also called for an immediate ceasefire arrangement subject to monitoring by an independent international mechanism, the adoption of necessary measures to protect civilians, ensuring their freedom of movement through safe corridors, and providing them with essential relief supplies, including life-saving medicine and food. It expressed concern over the ongoing violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms committed by both sides of the conflict since the outbreak of violence on April 15, 2023, particularly the use of aerial bombardment and drone attacks in densely populated areas, the death of hundreds of thousands of people, the forced displacement of millions inside and outside Sudan, and the destruction of health facilities and other civilian infrastructure in the country. The forum called for strengthening efforts to combat impunity and achieve justice, as well as enhancing regional and international coordination to apprehend all individuals accused by the International Criminal Court of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in Darfur, and to surrender them to the court. Sudan Session: For his part, Ambassador Ali Al-Jundi informed Radio Dabanga of a session held on the "developments of the armed conflict in Sudan," which featured remarks from himself, Abdelbagi Jibril (Director of the Sudan Knowledge Center in Switzerland), and a representative of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. Ambassador Ali Al-Jundi told Radio Dabanga that the session addressed allegations regarding the use of chemical weapons by the armed forces, the necessity of ending the war in Sudan, the impact of external interference, the historical roots of the conflict, the lack of accountability and impunity since independence, as well as the crimes committed by the warring parties. For his part, Abdelbagi Jibril stated that the issue of chemical weapons and the need for an investigation was reaffirmed, a recommendation that the African Commission has supported for a year. He pointed out that one of the Commission's members confirmed the Commission's interest in the matter and its close monitoring. Ambassador Ali Al-Jundi added that the number of participants in the forum reached about 350 people representing civil society organizations from more than 37 countries, including about 30 African countries and 7 countries from outside the continent.
