General Strike in Wadi Halfa Leads to Closure of Customs Yard and Ashkit Crossing

Wadi Halfa – October 11, 2026 – Radio Dabanga. The transport sector, customs brokers, loading and unloading workers, and transport owners in Wadi Halfa have launched a general strike and an open-ended sit-in, which has led to the closure of the customs yard and the Ashkit border crossing. Protesters told Radio Dabanga that the protests come in rejection of government decisions regarding the ban on the import of goods and the suspension of personal imports. The protests resulted in a total paralysis of the Ashkit crossing, and video clips showed a large number of trucks lined up along the road leading to the crossing. The protesters are demanding the immediate cancellation of the import ban, the reversal of the decision to stop personal imports, and the withdrawal of all policies that included the imposition of exorbitant levies and taxes on roads, in addition to activating border trade. Authorities had previously revoked the exemption granted to Wadi Halfa from the decision to ban the import of vegetables and fruits from Egypt, which had been exceptionally permitted for sale exclusively within Wadi Halfa to avoid harming local production areas in the rest of Sudan's states.
