Warnings of a Decline in Gezira Scheme Production Due to Rising Fuel and Fertilizer Prices

Gezira - September 23, 2026, Radio Dabanga - A member of the Farmers' General Assembly, Mustafa Al-Tarifi, stated today that farmers in the Gezira Scheme are facing rising fuel and fertilizer prices this year, which threatens a significant decline in production. Al-Tarifi confirmed to (Radio Dabanga) that the sharp rise in fuel prices has led to poor land preparation for farming, affecting essential tilling and processing operations. He explained that the season has witnessed a frantic and sharp increase in the prices of agricultural inputs since its inception, especially fertilizers. He added, "Despite farmers' attempts to use their savings to buy small quantities, prices continued to rise exorbitantly, with the price of urea fertilizer exceeding 300, making the process of fertilizing the land impossible for many producers after prices exceeded the farmer's ability to imagine or bear." The Farmers' General Assembly member warned of the expected consequences for productivity, noting that the farmers' inability to complete basic agricultural operations—most importantly fertilization—and their inability to meet their financial obligations will lead to weak production and overall productivity of the scheme, and a major shortage that prevents crops from reaching the required level.
