Central Bank of Sudan Announces Withdrawal of Old 500-Pound Note Editions from Circulation

Khartoum: October 1, 2026: Radio Dabanga - The Central Bank of Sudan has announced the withdrawal of all old editions of the 500-pound denomination from circulation across all states of Sudan, specifically those issued in 2023 or in previous years. The withdrawal process will continue for three months, effective from October 1, 2026. This decision follows previous announcements regarding the gradual replacement of the 1,000 and 500-pound denominations, which began on December 10, 2024. The Central Bank of Sudan clarified that the replacement of this denomination will take place in the states of Kordofan and Darfur, which were not included in the first and second phases of the replacement. The Bank allows holders of the banknotes subject to withdrawal the opportunity to exchange them at their face value during the period from October 1, 2026, until the end of the working day on December 31, 2026, exclusively through deposits into bank accounts at branches of commercial banks operating in the states of Kordofan and Darfur. The Bank confirmed that effective January 1, 2027, the banknotes subject to withdrawal will cease to be legal tender throughout Sudan and will no longer be considered valid for settling obligations or commercial transactions, without prejudice to the legal effects established by previous announcements. The Central Bank of Sudan appealed to the public, especially citizens in the states of Kordofan and Darfur, to review the text of the announcement, adhere to the dates and regulations stated therein, and take the initiative to deposit the editions subject to withdrawal currently in their possession into their bank accounts before the specified deadline.
