Al Jazirah - October 15, 2026 - Radio Dabanga Prices of basic commodities in Al Jazirah State, central Sudan, have witnessed a significant increase, described by citizens as unprecedented in the country's ancient and modern history. This rise is attributed to the increase in the price of the dollar and foreign currencies in general against the Sudanese pound, and the scarcity of fuel, especially gasoline, which has led to an increase in shipping and transportation costs. Al-Khair Al-Nour, a resident of Al Jazirah, told Radio Dabanga that these increases have affected most goods and crops, including oil, flour, lentils, milk, and rice, which has prompted citizens to reduce their purchases, especially those with limited incomes who are no longer able to afford the high cost of living. Some families have been forced to go without basic goods, such as milk, despite its nutritional importance. Al-Nour explained that the prices of flour and bread have seen noticeable increases, reaching in some areas one thousand pounds for two loaves. The prices of sorghum have also risen, with the price of a sack of sorghum reaching about 530,000 pounds. He added, 'These increases are negatively reflected in the lives of citizens and call for urgent and serious intervention by the government to limit the worsening of the crisis. Real solutions must be put in place that include short, medium, and long-term measures, instead of relying on temporary measures that do not address the roots of the problem.' Residents of Al Jazirah State depend on sorghum as a main food source, which is grown in large areas in the Gezira Scheme, followed by wheat, legumes, and cash crops. He warned that the continued rise in prices in this manner will have dire consequences for citizens, especially the most vulnerable groups and those with limited incomes.
