New York: September 24, 2026: Radio Dabanga. New York witnessed on Wednesday the holding of the first joint meeting between the 'Quartet' and 'Quintet' groups concerned with peace in Sudan. Participants in the meeting called for closer coordination between the political and security tracks, taking measures to curb violence and protect civilians in Sudan, and preparing mechanisms to monitor and verify any agreement reached in Sudan. The meeting called for strengthening operational coordination between the 'Quartet' and 'Quintet' groups and developing a joint roadmap that links humanitarian action, the cessation of hostilities, and civil dialogue, as well as more regular coordination between technical teams. Participants reaffirmed the focus on ending the conflict, alleviating humanitarian suffering, and supporting an inclusive Sudanese political process. They also highlighted ongoing work regarding a 'Humanitarian Declaration' and the necessity of addressing foreign military interference. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, who co-chaired the meeting with the United States, called for an immediate humanitarian truce and a cessation of hostilities as a path toward a permanent ceasefire, reiterating that there is no military solution to the conflict. He stressed the need for an inclusive, Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led political process that leads to the restoration of constitutional order while preserving Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and rejecting fragmentation. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission urged a halt to external military support fueling the conflict. He emphasized the necessity of moving forward on humanitarian, security, and political tracks in parallel so that they reinforce one another. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called on the two groups to transition from a stage of converging visions to systematic and operational coordination, which would help overcome the state of fragmentation. He identified three essential priorities: the humanitarian truce, the cessation of hostilities, and an inclusive, Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led dialogue. The Quintet group stressed the importance of engaging more deeply with Sudanese civil components and making efforts to unite various civil groups around an inclusive political process.
