Amsterdam: 24 September 2026: Radio Dabanga - The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has expressed concern over the escalating violence in Sudan, the rising number of displaced persons, and the worsening food insecurity in the country. In a statement, the office noted that clashes occurred on September 19 at the 'Al-Boursa' market in the city of Ed Daein, East Darfur State, resulting in injuries and the partial closure of the market. On the same day, reports indicated that 13 people were killed and more than 400 others were displaced following armed clashes between community groups at the 'Abuja' market in the city of Gereida, South Darfur State; additional injuries were also recorded following clashes in the city of Nyala. The office explained that the ongoing fighting in the states of North and South Kordofan, Blue Nile, and North Darfur has caused continued population displacement, with humanitarian partners reporting the displacement of thousands of new people over the past week. OCHA called on all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in accordance with international law, and to ensure rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to those in need for as long as required. OCHA pointed out that reports indicated a lack of bread in local markets in the Tawila locality, North Darfur, for four consecutive days; bakeries reportedly closed their doors on September 18 following tensions caused by the rapid rise in bread prices. According to the World Food Programme, the cost of the local food basket has increased by 13 percent compared to the previous month, reflecting broader increases in the prices of basic commodities across the country.
