Amsterdam: September 27, 2026 – Radio Dabanga. On Thursday, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the United Kingdom, on behalf of the Coalition for the Prevention of Atrocities and Ensuring Justice in Sudan, hosted a high-level meeting regarding the protection of civilians and frontline responders in Sudan. The 'Samoud' (Steadfastness) Coalition, the National Umma Party, and the MASHAD organization all welcomed the declaration issued by the meeting. The Coalition for the Prevention of Atrocities in Sudan includes the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, and Norway, in addition to the European Union. The coalition was established in late February 2026 as an extension of the Sudan Working Group at the UN Human Rights Council, with Canada being the only non-European member. Increased use of drones: According to the issued declaration, the meeting highlighted how the growing use of drones has expanded the scope of fighting across Sudan and intensified the harm caused to civilians, including humanitarian personnel and other frontline responders. The coalition called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, take all necessary practical measures to protect civilians and civilian objects, ensure safe, rapid, and unhindered access to humanitarian aid, and respect and protect humanitarian workers, emphasizing the necessity of holding those responsible for international law violations accountable. Ongoing violations: The meeting called on all parties to exert their utmost efforts to prevent further atrocities. The coalition renewed its deep concern regarding indiscriminate attacks on civilians, reports of the use of starvation as a weapon of war, as well as sexual violence directed against women and girls, which disproportionately affects them. It also noted the destruction of homes, markets, healthcare centers, water systems, and other basic civilian infrastructure, which contributes to a dangerous escalation of food insecurity and famine. It stated that the destruction of healthcare facilities and the disruption of their services, including maternity care, exposes women and other civilians in need of help to extreme danger. It stressed that restrictions on humanitarian access and attacks on humanitarian workers multiply the problems of displacement, hunger, and disease, causing profound harm to communities and increasing the risk of other heinous crimes. The coalition commended the courage of humanitarian workers and frontline responders who continue to assist and support communities across Sudan despite the grave risks they face, affirming that they must be protected and allowed to perform their work in a safe and unhindered environment. External interference: The coalition expressed deep concern over harmful external interventions that continue to fuel the war and prolong the suffering of civilians, adding: 'We demand that countries and other external actors cease arming, funding, or otherwise facilitating the parties to the war in Sudan.' The statement demanded that all countries comply with their obligations under the Sudan sanctions regime pursuant to Resolution 1591 and stop actions that fuel the war or facilitate further violations of international law. The coalition emphasized that measures to prevent further atrocities must be accompanied by accountability for these violations. It renewed its commitment to pressure all parties to fully comply with their duties under international humanitarian law, respect international human rights law, and ensure that those responsible for these violations are held accountable, adding: 'We support those working to document violations and attacks, preserve evidence, and push for accountability, including before the International Criminal Court.' The coalition affirmed its continued joint work to prevent further atrocities, strengthen accountability and justice, and protect civilians, humanitarian workers, and other frontline responders in Sudan. Welcoming: In separate statements, the Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces (Samoud) and the National Umma Party welcomed the statement issued by the Coalition for the Prevention of Atrocities and Ensuring Justice in Sudan. The 'Samoud' coalition considered the international coalition's efforts to be consistent with its own vision and principled positions, urging that the highest importance be given to the issues of civilians in Sudan. For its part, the Youth for Darfur and Future Organization (MASHAD) welcomed the statement issued by the coalition, praising its efforts to keep the dossier of civilian protection and the accountability of perpetrators of violations at the top of the international community's priorities. It called for the translation of international commitments into actual protection, including the activation of early warning mechanisms, ensuring unhindered access to humanitarian aid, and providing the necessary support for monitoring and documentation teams to ensure an end to impunity.
