UNICEF: 13 children killed and injured in drone attack on shelter in El Obeid

Amsterdam, October 2, 2026: Radio Dabanga reported that UNICEF stated one boy was killed and 12 other children were injured—including five boys and seven girls—as a result of a drone attack that targeted the 'Land Port' shelter for internally displaced persons in the city of El Obeid, North Kordofan State, late last night. UNICEF Representative in Sudan, Angela Kearney, said in a statement on Thursday: 'Children and families at the 'Land Port' had already been forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in sites and shelters, with many having been displaced multiple times.' She explained that these children come to the shelter in search of safety and protection, but any sense of security was completely shattered last night. In her statement, the UNICEF representative called for an end to attacks on places where children seek protection, as there is nowhere else for them to go. This incident is the latest example of the escalating repercussions of drone attacks on children in Sudan. Between January and September 2026, more than 400 children were killed or injured, and according to UNICEF, drone attacks were responsible for a significant proportion of these casualties among children. These attacks have caused damage to homes and civilian infrastructure, including schools, health facilities, water networks, and markets. UNICEF called on all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and to fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law, demanding the protection of civilians, including children, at all times.
