Hundreds of refugees leave Muji camp in eastern Chad due to aid cuts
Eastern Chad- October 8, 2026- Radio Dabanga: Hundreds of Sudanese refugees at the new 'Muji' camp in eastern Chad left their camp on Wednesday, heading toward the Chadian border town of 'Adré' using pack animals and on foot, in protest against their removal from humanitarian aid lists following an assessment conducted earlier this year. Refugees told Radio Dabanga that the assessment results were announced yesterday at the camp by the UNHCR and the Chadian National Commission for the Reception and Reintegration of Refugees and Returnees (CNARR). Refugees from the 'Abtenge' camp told Radio Dabanga that large numbers of refugees arriving from the 'Muji' camp reached 'Abtenge' yesterday evening on pack animals and on foot, mostly women and children, suffering from exhaustion and fatigue, having spent the night at the middle school before continuing their journey on Thursday morning. Acute shortage of aid: In eastern Chad as well, displaced persons in the Dage camp complain of an acute shortage of food aid, confirming that food distribution has been halted for about three months. The last ration was limited to two measures of corn, less than a liter of oil, and limited quantities of lentils per person. One displaced woman said that the aid stopped after the 'IMC' organization left the camp, without clarifying the reasons for the suspension, noting that some families had been unable to cook food for more than ten days due to the lack of income sources. She added that ten families recently left the camp on foot in hopes of reaching the city of Abéché, which is more than a three-hour drive away. The Dage camp houses more than 25,000 refugees, amid fears of increased departures of residents to Chadian cities and Libya, in light of deteriorating living conditions and declining access to aid.
