When the Street Laughs at Reality: Between the Hammer of Traditional Industry and the Anvil of Regulation
Dr. Osama Mohyeldeen Khalil discusses the Khartoum Consumer Protection and Supply Investigation's announcement regarding the dismantling of a criminal network in Al-Hadlab, Karari, which manufactured 'Tumbal-Bay' cooking pots from scrap metal, warning of the grave dangers to public health. Consistent with the Sudanese street's high immunity to crises and its indomitable sense of humor, the news was met with widespread mockery and sarcastic commentary. 'Tumbal-Bay' and handmade aluminum pots are not a recent phenomenon; they are a familiar part of our heritage and traditional industries that generations have relied upon. People's ridicule was not a dismissal of science, but rather a reflection of astonishment and bitter reality. For centuries, these pots were an affordable, popular economic choice, and it never occurred to the common person that what had been used for so long could be dangerous. In light of the harsh conditions of war and the immense financial pressure weighing on Sudanese families, where a father searches for a livelihood with all his resolve, any news concerning the closure of livelihoods or the criminalization of simple crafts becomes a source of anxiety and resentment. However, on the flip side, from a purely scientific perspective, the warnings from regulatory and standards authorities were not groundless. The informal processing of scrap—especially when vehicle waste, lead from batteries, and car parts are melted in primitive furnaces—is catastrophic for public health. The reaction of heavy metals like lead with acidic foods is a ticking time bomb, leading over time to chronic diseases such as kidney failure, deformities, and carcinogenic risks. Therefore, the regulatory authorities are right to be concerned about public health, as health is a priceless crown. The real challenge facing us today in Sudan is not in 'criminalizing' or 'shutting down' sources of livelihood and light industry, but in how to rehabilitate and manage them. With supply chains struggling and unemployment rising, home-based and small-scale industries represent the backbone of the self-reliant economy and a lifeline for families. Thus, the best and wisest solution lies in the following: Regulatory guidance instead of punitive regulation: Transforming standards and regulatory committees into 'technical incubators' that provide accessible and flexible 'Good Manufacturing Practices' (GMP) suitable for the scale of home or small production. Controlling inputs: Restricting the use of clean and safe raw materials (food-grade) and preventing the use of scrap contaminated with heavy metals and batteries. Awareness and gradual transition: Giving artisans opportunities to rectify their status and providing simplified guides on quality and safety standards that ensure work continues without harming the consumer. We need an economy that protects the consumer from toxins, while at the same time protecting the father seeking a livelihood from the specter of unemployment. A possible balance is the key to transitioning from the womb of crises to the horizons of safe production. osamamohyeldeen@gmail.com
