Bashir’s Lawyer: Many Countries Have Expressed Readiness to Host and Treat the Former President
Amsterdam: Friday, October 2, 2026 – Radio Dabanga. Mohamed Hassan Al-Amin, a member of the defense team for former President Omar al-Bashir, confirmed that al-Bashir is currently in detention in Khartoum and is receiving treatment at the Alia Specialist Hospital of the Medical Corps. He returned from Merowe due to a deterioration in his health. Al-Amin emphasized that there are many parties who would accept and welcome him more than the current leadership, which has kept him in detention for over 7 years. In his interview with Radio Dabanga, Al-Amin stated that moving al-Bashir to the Alia Hospital was necessary for further medical examinations and procedures available at the facility. He noted the existence of a medical report confirming the necessity of his travel abroad for treatment of certain symptoms that have emerged and have yet to be diagnosed, stressing that his travel has become an urgent necessity. He added: 'His family has requested—and we, as the defense team, are also requesting—his right to receive treatment outside Sudan, as this is a necessary matter and one of his most basic rights.' He explained that previous approvals were merely personal notifications to him from certain entities but were never implemented; there were promises to allow him to travel and be released, whereas this has already been carried out for others who were in detention with him. No proceedings before the prosecution or judiciary. Al-Amin denied the existence of any ongoing proceedings before the prosecution or the judiciary against al-Bashir, considering the June 30, 1989, coup case to be suspended. He pointed out that all defendants in that case, whether inside or outside Sudan, are present and moving freely. He expressed his belief that the war has imposed completely different circumstances, noting that more than 2,000 people sentenced to death have left and not returned. He added: 'Even those who participated in the fighting and committed many crimes have returned now to speak on platforms, so how about a person who ruled Sudan for 30 years, sacrificed himself in South Sudan and other locations, and faced many dangers out of loyalty to this nation?!' He said: 'We do not believe this is a request we are submitting to the chairman of the Sovereignty Council and the country's leaders as if it were a request for an ordinary person; it is a request for a person who gave much to his country.' He continued: 'Therefore, we consider it very necessary to allow the former president to go abroad for treatment, and this is the least that can be offered to him.' Many countries are ready to host al-Bashir. Regarding the expected destination for al-Bashir abroad, the lawyer did not specify a particular country, stating only: 'The place the president will go to is his right to choose among the regional countries where treatment is available and that are safe for him; he could reside there during the treatment period as he wishes.' He explained that his destination cannot be determined now, saying the matter is left to circumstances. He continued: 'There are several countries that have expressed their readiness to host and treat him, and they will be his place of residence in the coming phase if he is permitted to travel outside Sudan.' Al-Amin concluded by saying that the opportunity is available and it cannot be said that there is no party willing to accept him, reiterating that many parties welcome him more than the current leadership, which has kept him in detention for more than 7 years, even after judicial and prosecutorial proceedings have ceased. He questioned the reasons for his continued detention after reaching the age of eighty and the deterioration of his health.
