Gezira- October 9, 2026- Radio Dabanga. The Secretariat of the Gezira and Managil Farmers' Alliance issued a statement warning of a disastrous failure facing the current summer agricultural season, resulting from delays in preparation and canal clearing, as well as an acute shortage in the flow of irrigation water. This has led to the cultivated areas suffering from severe thirst, threatening to remove them from production and exacerbating the food gap. The statement explained that the exorbitant rise in agricultural input prices and the complexity of financing procedures by the Agricultural Bank, alongside the spread of parallel farming, have burdened farmers with debt and losses. The Alliance held the scheme's management fully responsible for the ongoing deterioration, demanding the dismissal and accountability of the Governor, the formation of an investigative committee to determine those responsible for the thirst of the agricultural lands, and compensation for all affected farmers. Yesterday, in a press conference in Khartoum, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Professor Ismat Qureshi, stated that the Gezira Scheme is witnessing a noticeable recovery, with more than 800,000 feddans planted after having been in a state of ruin.
