Record surge in donkey prices at Mayo market due to fuel crisis
Khartoum: October 14, 2026 - Radio Dabanga. Donkey prices have risen to an unprecedented level at the Mayo market in southern Khartoum, influenced by the sharp increase in dollar and fuel prices. This has pushed citizens in the outskirts of Khartoum to return to relying on donkey carts as a primary means of transportation and movement amidst the scarcity of traditional transport and the high costs of operating them. In the same context, a citizen revealed that a single donkey is being sold in the market for about two billion pounds, excluding the price of the cart itself. Meanwhile, a good donkey capable of working and bearing heavy loads can reach up to six billion pounds. This reflects the high demand and increasing pressure on this alternative means to meet daily needs and secure livelihood and transportation requirements under the current economic conditions.
